A simple, basic commuter twin, the GS500E is the preferred choice of UK rider training schools, making it a familiar machine for many riders. Its low-tech DOHC air-cooled parallel twin Engine: is based on the GS450 twin Engine: of the late 1980s. Two-valve heads mean low-rewing, torquey power delivery, but leave the GS500 rather asthmatic at higher revs. The Frame: is similarly unassuming – the steel Frame: is cheap to manufacture and tough, but adds Weight: . Basic suspension units offer capable if unsophisticated damping performance, but single disc brakes front and rear give dependable stopping power. Cheap to buy and run, most GS500s work hard as commuters, courier or training machines.
